Oita

Oita is a beautiful prefecture surrounded by nature. It’s also well-known for hot springs (Onsen). Many people who live in Beppu city have their own Onsen at home therefore you will see rising steam everywhere in Beppu. The most famous food in Oita is Toriten which is Chicken Tempra. You should also try Kabosu which is a Japanese lime. There are a lot of drinks with Kabosu flavor and you can only find them in Oita!

Beppu Jigoku Meguri

The "hells" (地獄, jigoku) of Beppu are seven spectacular hot springs for viewing rather than bathing, displaying steaming ponds of various colors, bubbling mud pools and other hydrothermal activity.

Takasaki Monkey Park

Takasakiyama Monkey Park is a popular monkey reserve at the base of Mount Takasaki, a 628 meter high mountain along the coast between Beppu and Oita City. The mountain is home to some 1500 wild Japanese macaques that roam freely around its steep, forested slopes. Park visitors can get close to the monkeys as they are fed, and watch them as they run around, play or just sit in the sun and groom each other.

Kinrin Lake

Walking paths surround the lake as well as more small shops and cafes, and there is a small shrine located at the lake's southern end.

Harajiri Waterfall

Harajieiri Waterfall is nicknamed the "Niagara Falls of Japan" for its distinctive horseshoe shape, though these falls are much smaller. Formed by the great eruption of Mt. Aso 90,000 years ago, the falls are around 20 meters high and 120 meters wide. The surrounding flatlands make the falls more impressive, as they seem to appear out of nowhere.

Explore Kitsuki Town with Kimono

Kitsuki castle town retains well-preserved atmosphere of the Edo period, and was the first town in Japan certified as a “historic townscape where you are immersed in experience while wearing kimono.” Admission will be free of charge for entering the facilities such as Kitsuki Castle, etc. for those wearing kimono. You may also receive discount at 30 different locations including restaurants, etc.
Kitsuki is considered as “little Kyoto,” and the town presents the Japanese kimono culture to the world with the intent of becoming a town where kimonos look right at home second only to Kyoto.

Ropeway to Mt. Tsurumi

Mount Tsurumi (鶴見岳, Tsurumidake) is a 1375 meter high mountain that overlooks Beppu. The mountain is accessible via the Beppu Ropeway which takes visitors nearly 800 meters up the steep slopes to a small park near the summit. The park offers multiple observation decks with panoramic views of Beppu and Oita City, Mount Yufu and as far as the Kuju Mountains when visibility is good.

Hot Springs

Beppu is one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Japan. The city is blessed by as many as eight different springs, named Beppu Onsen, Kannawa Onsen, Myoban Onsen, Kankaiji Onsen, Hamawaki Onsen, Kamegawa Onsen, Horita Onsen and Shibaseki Onsen, each featuring public baths and ryokan with bathing facilities. Together they produce more hot spring water than any other onsen resort in the country

Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge

Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge is the highest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. The bridge offers marvellous views of one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. The graceful span hangs and sometimes sways above the deep Kyusui ravine at a height of 173 m above the river valley floor. With a length of 390 m and an altitude of 777 m, this is a bridge to remember.

Studio Ghibli Shop

The main street in Yufuin is lined with cafes, boutiques and small museums, giving Yufuin an atmosphere more like a trendy shopping area than a traditional onsen town. Studio Ghibli Shops is one of them.

Usa Jingu Shrine

Usa Shrine (宇佐神宮, Usa Jingū), built in the 8th century, is located at the base of the Kunisaki Peninsula. It is the head shrine of thousands of shrines across Japan that are dedicated to Hachiman, the god of archery and war, who has also been identified with the legendary 15th emperor of Japan, Emperor Ojin. Usa Shrine had a big influence on the Kunisaki Peninsula's culture and shaped the local mountain worship religion.
